About the artwork

Self-Portrait in a Cap, Open-Mouthed

This charming and humorous self-portrait is an etching by Rembrandt van Rijn is entitled "Self-portrait with beret, wide-open eyes". Rembrandt made many self-portraits during his lifetime; both paintings and etchings. This is one of his earlier works, made when he was in his early twenties. It is a great example of a tronie, a portrait style in which people were depicted with exaggerated facial expressions and often in costume.

About the artist

Rembrandt van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn, born in Leiden in 1606, is often considered one of the greatest painters in history. His paintings, often rich in texture and detail, were not only visually stunning, but imbued with emotion. Rembrandt's mastery of light and shadow, known as 'chiaroscuro', was second to none, giving his portraits an almost three-dimensional feel and bringing his scenes to life with dramatic intensity. Besides his own masterpieces, Rembrandt was also known as a dedicated and influential teacher.

About the art movement

Dutch Golden Age

During the Dutch Golden Age, the Netherlands became a hotbed of artistic innovation. While painting remained a dominant form, the art of etching also began to gain popularity. Etching, a process in which an image is engraved into a metal plate and then printed, was celebrated for its ability to capture fine details and shadows. Rembrandt, with his eye for depth and emotion, used this technique to produce some of his most vivid works.
