About the artwork

Flower Holders

These flowers and insects are very fittingly depicted on a fine porcelain flower holder on display in the permanent collection of Prinsenhof Museum Delft. The flower holder was commissioned by Maria II, wife of King William III. She was a great fan of Delft Blue pottery and single-handedly played an important role in spreading the Delft Blue trend internationally around the end of the 17th century.

About the artist

De Grieksche A

Adrianus Kocx ran the famous Delft factory De Grieksche A from 1685 and lifted it to new heights. He was one of the first to introduce the fusion of Eastern and European motifs, inspired by Chinese porcelain from the Kangxi period, which later became known worldwide as Delft Blue. Kocx's innovations in shapes and designs made De Grieksche A one of the most prestigious ceramics factories in the Netherlands and abroad.

About the art movement

Delftware

In the late 17th century, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) brought large quantities of Chinese porcelain to Europe, unleashing a veritable trend. Delft artisans, inspired by the delicate blue and white patterns, began to create their own interpretation. With a blend of local craftsmanship and Oriental aesthetics, Delftware became a unique art form that not only reflected the rich Dutch trading history, but also became an enduring symbol of cultural exchange.
